With the arrival of the cold season, it may seem that everything is gloomy and sad. It’s no wonder that in autumn and winter we often feel, as they say, under the dog. Essential oils are a natural remedy that helps combat such feelings by improving your mood, and are also believed to reduce stress, improve circulation, and even have a detoxifying effect.
Essential oils – treasures of nature in the service of our ancestors
Essential oils they were already used by ancient cultures in religious ceremonies, but also for cosmetic and medicinal purposes.
The ancient Egyptians were the first to research and use what we now call aromatherapy. In the hot and dry climate of their homeland, the use of (essential) oils in skin care was natural, but they also valued them as effective health enhancers and used them as remedies for all kinds of ailments. Mummies of ancient Egyptian pharaohs testify, among other things, to the antibacterial effects of essential oils.
Using essential oils, smoking frankincense and myrrhwhich have a characteristic scent, was a tradition, e.g. in Jewish culture, where they were believed to have a calming and soothing effect.
The notes of the famous Arab physician Avicenna (980-1037), considered alongside Hippocrates as the “father of medicine”, testify to his skill in distilling aromatic oil extracts and using them for medicinal purposes.
When the plague struck Toulouse in 1630, four thieves became famous there, breaking into the houses of the dead to steal, but miraculously not becoming infected. When they were finally caught and sentenced to death, they were offered a pardon on the condition that they would share their secret. They explained that they rubbed their bodies with wine vinegar infused with sage, thyme, marjoram, lavender, rosemary, and a number of other aromatic herbs. And all these plants are known for their antibiotic properties. This recipe for “four thieves’ vinegar” was included in the French pharmacopoeia as an official medicine until the end of the 19th century.
Organic essential oils in aromatherapy
The term “aromatherapy” was first used by the French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé in a book of the same title published in 1937. After seriously injuring his hand in an explosion at a perfume factory, Gattefossé reached for some lavender oil that happened to be nearby and immediately applied some to the burned area. He was then delighted to discover that not only had the wound not become inflamed, but according to him it had healed without leaving a scar! It was this experience that led the chemist to devote himself more to the study of essential oils. Today, Gattefossé is known as the father of modern aromatherapy, whose popularity is constantly growing around the world.
