Regular cleaning and disinfection of the oral cavity significantly reduces the occurrence of cavities. Some medicinal herbs can be used for this purpose. Teeth are also strengthened by an adequate supply of essential minerals and vitamins.
What herbs and oils support healthy teeth and gums.
The health of our gums is supported by tannins, which help strengthen the gums. Tannins are found in large quantities in tea and oak bark, for example. Oak bark decoction is used to gargle and rinse the mouth. Sage decoction is also suitable for this purpose, as its essential oil and salvin lactone also have antibiotic effects.
Medicinal herbs
Folk medicine also uses herbal infusions that have healing properties to treat the oral cavity. These include, for example, common yarrow, chamomile (both herbs contain healing azulene), rapeseed and marigold. The healing of mucous membranes is also accelerated by allantoin, which is contained in comfrey and honey, among other things. An infusion of both of these herbs can be used as a gargle for difficult-to-heal inflammations of the oral cavity (periodontal disease) or periodontitis.
Menthol and other essential oils
The essential oils of some plants also have significant antiseptic effects. Menthol, which is part of peppermint oil, is very often used in oral hygiene products. Locally, it irritates cold receptors and causes a pleasant feeling of cold. Also used are essential oils of clove, motherwort, thyme, myrrh, camphor, myrtle, eucalyptus, fennel and cinnamon. Oregano Oil, which is part of Oregano Oil, is also suitable for rinsing the throat and oral cavity. For this purpose, we use 2-3 drops, which we dilute with water or milk, in which the product dissolves better.
